Sustainability has become an important purchasing criterion today. As a result, more and more packaging is appearing on the market with terms like "eco", "green", or "environmentally friendly". But how do you know if a package is actually sustainable?

For companies, it is increasingly important to look beyond marketing claims alone. A package may look sustainable, but still have a significant impact on the environment. Those who want to make conscious choices therefore look at the complete picture: the materials used, the design, the lifespan, and what happens to the packaging after it has fulfilled its function.


Look beyond the label


A green logo, a brown cardboard appearance, or a claim like "100% recyclable" does not say everything about the actual sustainability of a package.

Sustainability must be considered over the entire lifecycle of a package:

  • Where do the raw materials come from?
  • How much energy is needed for production?
  • Can the packaging be reused?
  • Is it easily recyclable?
  • What happens after use?

This holistic approach is often referred to as a life cycle assessment (LCA). It provides a much more realistic picture of the environmental impact than individual sustainability claims.


Sustainable materials form the basis


The choice of material has a significant impact on the ecological footprint of packaging.

Paper and cardboard solutions are among the most sustainable options today because they:

  • can be made from renewable resources;
  • are highly recyclable;
  • are widely collected in Europe;
  • fit within a circular economy.

Also, look for recognized labels such as FSC® or PEFC®. These certifications guarantee that the fibers used come from responsibly managed forests.

Recycled materials also deserve extra attention. The higher the share of recycled materials, the fewer new natural resources are needed.


Less material often means less impact


One of the biggest misconceptions about sustainable packaging is that sustainability is solely about the material used.

The design plays at least an equally important role.

A well-designed package:

  • uses fewer resources;
  • takes up less space during transport;
  • reduces transport costs;
  • lowers CO₂ emissions in the logistics chain.

Sustainability often arises from optimization. A package that perfectly fits the product and does not require excess filler material is usually more sustainable than a heavier package made from a "greener" material.


Recyclable is only valuable if recycling is also feasible.


Many packages carry a recycling logo, but are difficult to recycle in practice.

This is often due to the use of composite materials such as:

  • plastic combined with cardboard;
  • different types of plastics;
  • coatings or laminates that are difficult to separate.

The simpler the material structure, the greater the chance that the packaging will be effectively recycled.

Monomaterial packaging is therefore becoming increasingly popular. They make sorting easier and improve the quality of the recycling stream.


Reusable packaging is becoming increasingly important.


In addition to recyclability, attention to reuse is also growing.

In many sectors, companies are switching to packaging solutions that can be used multiple times. Think of protective cardboard inserts, modular packaging, or return systems for transport packaging.

By extending the lifespan of a package, the environmental impact per use decreases significantly.

Especially within B2B logistics, we are increasingly seeing that reuse is becoming an important part of sustainable packaging policy.


Pay attention to supplier transparency.


A reliable packaging partner will communicate openly about the sustainability of their solutions.

Therefore, always ask about:

  • used materials;
  • recycling percentages;
  • certifications;
  • origin of raw materials;
  • CO₂-related data if available.

Companies that take sustainability seriously make their choices based on evidence and transparency. Vague claims without numbers or certificates are often a warning sign.


Sustainability and product protection go hand in hand


The most sustainable packaging is not necessarily the one that contains the least material.

When products are damaged during transport, a greater environmental impact often arises from returns, replacements, and additional transport movements.

A good sustainable packaging therefore finds the right balance between:

  • maximum protection;
  • minimal material use;
  • efficient transport;
  • optimal recyclability.

Therefore, solutions made from corrugated cardboard and honeycomb cardboard are gaining ground. They combine low weight with excellent protective properties and are also fully recyclable.


Sustainable packaging is a strategic choice


More and more companies no longer see sustainable packaging as a cost, but as an investment.

Customers expect sustainable choices, legislation is becoming stricter, and organizations want to reduce their ecological footprint. The right packaging helps companies not only achieve their sustainability goals but can also save costs through more efficient transport and less material use.

Those who want to recognize sustainable packaging look beyond a label or a marketing claim. It is about the combination of material choice, design, recyclability, reusability, and transparency.
